Google Offers Free Airport Wi-Fi Over Holiday Season

Google Tuesday announced that it is working with a number of U.S. airports, as well as Boingo Wireless, Advanced Wireless Group, Airport Marketing Income and others to provide free Wi-Fi during the holiday season through Jan. 15, 2010. The service currently includes 47 airports, including Las Vegas, San Jose, Boston, Baltimore, Burbank, Houston, Indianapolis, Seattle, Miami, Fort Lauderdale, Orlando, St. Louis and Charlotte. Additionally, as a result of the project, Burbank and Seattle airports will begin offering airport-wide free Wi-Fi indefinitely, the Google said.

Free WiFi is becoming ubiquitous:

Barnes & Noble, the largest bookstore chain in America, allows patrons to
surf for free, in a deal with AT&T announced this August.

Borders, the second-largest bookstore chain in the United States, will
provide free WiFi in about 500 of its U.S. stores. The company is working
with Verizon to equip those stores with Wi-Fi, with service available this
month.

Verizon is partnering with Boingo to deliver free WiFi access. Free Verizon

Flip my Wi-Fi

SF WiFi is tackling one of the most exciting aspects in data communication – flipping the wireless network. We are helping clients make the transformation from the eyesore of legacy wireless gear into an efficient, feature rich wireless system.

SF WiFi boasts a team of characters that renovates Hospitality, SMB, SME and hotspot wireless in record time. It sounds simple, but sparks fly (not really) and tempers are high (legacy resellers) before the fixer-uppers are ready to go back online.

Will “Flip my WiFi” get picked up by a major cable TV channel? That’s doubtful. But if it does you can expect to watch it on a wireless IPTV. In HD!

Device to Device Wi-Fi

The Wi-Fi Alliance plans a new specification “Wi-Fi Direct” to support device-to-device connections over same range and as same speed as Wi-Fi, but without a hotspot or access point. Security features built into the Wi-Fi Direct specification will prevent peer-to-peer devices from compromising corporate networks.

The specification can be implemented in any Wi-Fi device, from mobile phones, cameras, printers, and notebook computers, to human interface devices such as keyboards and headphones.
