Wireless Trending

We’ve read many articles this week about wireless offloading–802.11ac, 802.11u, in general, the future of wireless. This caught us reflecting on our clients’ wireless progressions.

We have a hotel client in San Francisco supporting wireless at their 16 story/120 room property. In the past year alone we have seen their guest wireless usage increase to more than double.

In 2011 we would see stats of 20-25 users passing 8GB of data. We now see 80 concurrently connected devices, passing 25-40GB of data a day. That’s practically a four fold increase of data in just a little over a year and these numbers are consistent across all our wireless hotel clients.

Our Take on Wireless Trending:
User capacity increases: mobile device driven
Bandwidth usage increases: video driven
Cell phone offloading: hasn’t occurred too much, this is the next trend
Coverage: everywhere. WiFi is not just in the lobby anymore
User expectations: system uptime, stability, ease of use, free
Customer expectations: coverage, stability, support WMM (data voice video),
Management features: simple dashboard view of system and usage stats.

Number of Wi-Fi Hotspots to Quadruple by 2015

Number of Wi-Fi Hotspots to Quadruple by 2015
By Mikael Ricknäs, IDG News    Nov 9, 2011

The number of public Wi-Fi hotspots is expected to increase by 350 percent in the next four years, as operators look for ways to offload traffic from their mobile networks, according to a report by market research company Informa Telecoms and Media.

By 2015 users around the world will be able to connect to 5.8 million public hotspots, Informa wrote in the “Global developments in public Wi-Fi” report, which was commissioned by Wireless Broadband Alliance. WBA members include AT&T, Boingo, Cisco Systems, Deutsche Telekom and Google. Its goal is to make Wi-Fi services easier to use.

Home Wireless Solutions

SF WiFi serves customers in the hospitality, SMB, and hotspot markets. But what about home office wireless solutions? SF WiFi is pleased to officially announce we now support the home wireless market. We have found many commonalities among the demands of our industrial, hospitality, and residential clients. Therefore it only stands to reason that we expand our support to include homeowners.

Common Client Specifics:

  1. Wireless signal drops out at various rooms in the house.
  2. Client works from home and needs wireless signal delivered throughout the property versus having it delivered to only one or two rooms.
  3. Limited access to run new Cat 5 cables.
  4. Residents use three or more wireless devices, laptops, printers, PDA’s, iDevice docking station concurrently.
  5. Multiple complications arise in interior coverage issues artificially created by the residences’ interior walls, tiles, mirrors, granite, multiple floors, etc.
  6. A friend is a wiz with computers and has rigged a not so inexpensive network solution which only works like my brother in law – sporadically. (Okay, I threw that one in. But does it sound sadly familiar?)

Monster Home to Happy Home:

SF WiFi has serviced homes in San Francisco and the Peninsula that did not receive quality signal coverage. The owners had spent time and hundreds of dollars outfitting their homes with inefficient wireless equipment. We’ve heard it all from trying numerous repeaters, running bits of cable, and moving access points. They’ve basically have tried everything short of wiring up the kitchen sink. Needless to say, none of these methods provided a reliable solution. We admit, clients always seem skeptical when they first meet us. Their usual cry for help is, “We’ve tried everything.” But after working with us we usually hear “Why didn’t I call you sooner!”

 Process:

As a special service SF WiFi provides a free site survey to all our customers. We have found this survey helps us determine signal coverage, design access point placement, and client application needs while at the same time saves the client money. We then submit a proposal outlining our design, equipment, and installation costs.

 Final Note:

What are you really looking for in a wireless network? If it’s great coverage, reliability, stable throughput, no dropouts, and ease of use then join the long list of customers SF WiFi has satisfied over the years. Our success rate is 100%–just ask us for our referrals. We can provide your happy home a reliable wireless network so you can get the work done while listening to Pandora by the patio pool.

Hospitality Wireless Special

From what we hear from our Hospitality clients guest occupancy has been down during the winter. Business is starting to pick up a bit this spring and with summer approaching it is a good time to look at amenities and upgrade long overdue services.

Hotel guests are now pounding the hotel wireless networks with their iPhones, Netbooks, laptops and connecting to traffic intense sites like Pandora, YouTube, Hulu and maybe connecting back to their office for email and work. Nowadays almost no vacation lacks a few business emails.

A wireless network with spotty coverage, poor design, downtime, lack of features will drive guests away.

I have been told by a few clients that guests will not even check in if there isn’t sufficient wireless at the hotel.

SF WiFi resolves wireless network issues. Our Hotel General Managers are happy and the guests don’t complain to the front desk!! Well maybe guests still complain about the continental breakfast – but we can’t support that.

SF WiFi offers s FREE site survey to gather the necessary information for a proper wireless design.
